With hopes of hitting its fundraising goal by Friday evening, Smile FM's Spring Fun Drive stood at 27.5% just a few hours into the official event, though fundraising efforts actually began in March.
Listeners have shared stories of the impact of the music heard on Smile FM. One young woman said she had been contemplating suicide just hours before phoning into the station to say "thank you" for songs that changed her perspective about her own situation. A mother called in to share about how the music on Smile FM helped bring her back to Christ 13 years ago, and how today, her daughter, who is enduring her own struggles, including time behind bars, has been inspired by the music and ministry of Smile FM to reset her situation and focus on God as she changes her life.
Dozens of similar stories are heard during the broadcast. They are shared with Smile FM on a near-daily basis.
The non-commercial license issued by the FCC to Smile FM does not allow the stations to sell or air advertisements. This means a lot more music gets played, but it also means that listener contributions sustain and grow the ministry. While there are occasional contributions of $1,000 or more, Smile FM's primary support is made up of recurring small monthly donations. The average monthly gift is $40.
